Gym Membership Cooling-Off Periods by State
You signed up, walked out, and immediately regretted it. Good news: in most states you have a short legal window to undo it for a full refund.
A "cooling-off period" lets you cancel a brand-new gym contract within a few days for a full refund — no reason needed. It's the law, not a favor.
How the cooling-off period works
Most state health-club laws give you 3 business days to cancel a new membership and get everything back. A few states are more generous.
The clock usually starts the day you sign (or get your copy of the contract). Miss it, and you fall back on your other state rights (relocation, disability, etc.).
States with a longer window
- Rhode Island — 10 days
- Maryland — up to 7 business days (verify)
- Georgia — 7 business days
- California and Hawaii — 5 business days (California's window scales up for pricier contracts)
Most other states use the standard 3 business days. Check your exact rights on your state page.
How to use it
- Act fast — the window is short and starts at signing.
- Cancel in writing (don't rely on a phone call). Use our letter generator.
- Send with proof of delivery before the deadline.
- Watch for your refund — the law sets a deadline for it (often 15–30 days).
"Business days" usually exclude weekends and holidays — but read your state's definition. When in doubt, cancel the same day you change your mind.
Not sure what your contract says? Upload it and we'll find your window — nothing stored.
