1. A freeze is not a cancellation. Your cancellation notice clock doesn't start, and you're still a member. 2. It auto-resumes. When the freeze ends, full dues restart without asking you again. 3. It can stretch your commitment. On minimum-term contracts, many gyms extend the term by the freeze length — same total paid months.
Freeze the right way (5 minutes)
- Ask in writing (ask your home club (franchised — no universal corporate channel)): "What is the freeze fee, the maximum length, what bills during the freeze, and does the freeze extend my commitment?"
- Get the approval in writing — a rep's verbal "you're all set" doesn't stop a draft.
- Calendar the end date. Billing resumes automatically; set a reminder a week before.
- Check your next statement. If dues still bill, reply to your written approval and dispute the charge.
